Aesthetically significant as an example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical timber framed single storey cottage dating from the first decades of the twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.
Single storey weatherboard and painted corrugated iron hipped roof house. There is a bull nosed verandah, which is supported turned timber posts and timber brackets. The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of Fifth Street; 2, 10, 14 & 16.
This is not the fifth of any avenues or streets. Speculation is that the ‘Fifth’ is for George V, who, as the Duke of York, visited the state in 1901. This was the time that the owner, Simpson, called his land the Duke of York Estate. A street nearby is York St. The land on which house 14 Fifth Avenue stands was vacant in 1915/16 and owned by James Healy. In 1917/18 the vacant lot changed ownership from Healy to Charles Harold Dwelly. Ownership of the lot changed again in 1918/19 from Dwelly to Arthur McBride who had a weatherboard and plaster cottage built. In 1920/21 Constance Wilson became the owner/occupier and was still residing in the house in 1940/41. The house was originally numbered 13 Fifth Avenue and was renumbered to the original number in the mid1930s. The house is on Lot 10 of CSL 62 and 67.
