Aesthetically significant as a fine example of Fremantle’s vernacular architecture. Typical attached pair of cottages dating from the early twentieth century. Historically significant as a representation of working people’s living conditions in the Fremantle area.
Duplex, 11-11a Martha Street. Single storey stone duplex has brick quoining to window and door openings and band at sill height. The hipped corrugated iron clad roof has two brick chimneys with corbelling. There is a bull nosed verandah which is supported by timber posts and decorative brackets. The windows are timber double hung sash. The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of Martha Street; 7, 9 & 11-11a.
Duplex, 11-11a Martha Street. Construction is recorded as about 1913 of two single storey brick, stone, weatherboard and galvanized semi-detached resident units on Lot 5 CSL 7. Strata plan 11 /13 Martha Street surveyor notes from 1977 regarding schedule of works is on file at the City of Fremantle Local History Collection.
