House,39 Hampton Road, is a typical rendered masonry, and iron single storey house dating from c1890. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
39 Hampton Road is a single storey, brick and iron house with a symmetrical façade built c.1890 and designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are face brick and rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door and windows either side. The verandah has a continuous corrugated iron roof supported on chamfered timber posts with simple wooden brackets. There are two chimneys with chimney pots evident. There is a rendered masonry wall with garden bed to the front boundary line.
Hampton Road was originally called Prison Road. It derives its name from John Stephen Hampton (1810-1869), the Governor of WA from 1862-68. He was previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment. House, 39 Hampton Road was built some time before 1895. It is listed in the rate book for that year as a cottage occupied by Frederick George. By 1910, the cottage was owned by Charles Groves and occupied by George Strang. A PWD plan dated 1913 shows a small rectangular cottage with full length front and rear verandahs. George Strang subsequently bought the property and was listed as the owner/occupier from c. 1925 until his death in the early 1960s. Ownership of House, 39 Hampton Road then passed to Gertrude Strang. In 1981, House, 39 Hampton Road was owned by the Green family. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle.
