(Criterion 2.3) Crothers Buildings contributes to the community's sense of place in that it is an integral component of the gold boom architecture of Hannan Street. (Criterion 4.2)
A single-storey building with a highly decorative parapet exhibiting classical motifs. The building is built to the building line of Hannan Street and forms part of the masonry 'wall' that extends almost the length of the street block. A verandah extends the length of the facade and over the pavement. The main features of the building are the tiled entrance, fine pressed metal ceilings with lantern, and large marble display slabs that are complemented by a tiled dado. Shopfronts on the ground floor have been altered.
Mr J. Crothers was the contractor for City Markets (opposite), York Hotel (adjacent), as well as the Crothers Buildings (Laurie, 1995: 26).
