The house itself attracts very little architectural interest, but if it does date from 1883, is a significant technical accomplishment in the first few years of European settlement of the district. The building sits comfortably in its garden setting, unfortunately now separated from the river context by the high levee bank. The Red House is held in some esteem by the local community for its historical significance and association with a respected pioneer family.
A simple four room cottage with verandahs all round which was built on the bank of the Gascoyne River ini 1883 by a pioneer of the district, Charles Thomas Wheelock. (ref R.s.Memory "a Town Grows") The structure is of mudbrick with a corrugated iron roof and as far as can be seen is in sound condition. The house has been refurbished with a new kitchen and bathroom on the verandah; the internal walls lined with plastic timber panelling.
Assessment 1989 Construction 1883, existing in 1887 Construction mudbrick, iron roof. Additions/alterations: verandahs filled in, walls clad, new plumbing
