Physical Description

DEMOLISHED. Retained on MHI for historical information only. The original house at 98 Thompson Road was a single storey asbestos and tile cottage with asymmetrical facade constructed in 1950. Walls were painted fibre cement sheeting. Roof was tiled and hipped with eaves. Front elevation asymmetrical. There was a low timber post and mesh fence to the front boundary line.

History

Thompson Road was named for George Thompson (1838-1874), Fremantle's first town clerk (1871-73). The street is mainly residential, with some commercial development at the northern end between Alfred Road and McCabe Road. The majority of the houses were built c. 1900. Only a few lots on the street remained vacant in the 1920s. House, 98 Thompson Road was built c. 1950. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle. An application for demolition of the property was made in February 2004. It was demolished in 2009.
