Parent Place or Precinct

04281 Hay Street Mall Precinct

Statement of Significance

The place has some aesthetic value for the remnant elements of the Post War International style on the upper level façade. The place has historic value for its association with the development of the Hay Street retail precinct throughout the 20th century. The place has historic value for its association with the Forum Coffee Lounge which was a well known cafe in Hay Street for many decades. The place has social value for the many members of the community for its continuity of function, and contribution to the sense of place of the Hay Street mall. The place is representative of the type of commercial premises in a retail precinct that have grown and changed as occupancies and standards change.

Physical Description

Two storey structure that has been substantially remodelled to the exterior removing much of its original inter-war aesthetic. The upper section of the façade has been divided into a grid pattern incorporating blank panels of varying sizes, three small windows and three pairs of casement windows. The edges of the facade appear to be clad in metal. The retail portion of the facade at ground level consists of a deeply recessed door flanked by plate glass display windows. Original timber floors remain extant in storage area. Metal framed casement windows with original hardware to openings at upper level. Does not appear to be any original ornamentation at the upper level accommodation. Open plan shop with contemporary fit out, no evidence of any original details or finishes.

History

From the available information this building was constructed c1894 and the first occupant was draper, Mrs Knott. Since that time the building has had a variety of occupants and many modifications. A long term tenant and owner was tobacconist and stationer, John Gleeson who refitted the premises for his occupancy in 1919 and remained there until c1937. Subsequent occupants were Madame Luckey, milliner and Raeme's Vogue Dress shop. It is probable that the current façade was constructed c1960 when The Forum Coffee Lounge became the occupant. They occupied the place until c2013.
