Norfolk Island Pines, Norfolk Street are many large significant trees planted on both sides of the street in 1908. They represent Fremantle's landscape policies at the turn of the twentieth century. The high social value is further enhanced by the community activism at the end of the twentieth century that saved them.
Large Norfolk Island Pine trees that line both sides of Norfolk Street
The pine trees on Norfolk Street were planted through the instigation of Councillor Frank Nicholas in approximately 1908. He was also responsible for the planting of pine trees on the Esplanade and Douro Road in the same period. These trees lined the street on both sides. They were damaged by Council attempts to improve the road surface in the early 1990s and were saved by concerted community action. This place has been identified in 'Fremantle's Landscape: A Study for the Municipal Inventory' as being of cultural heritage significance. On the 27 February 2019 the City of Fremantle’s Council adopted the Register of Significant Trees and Vegetated Areas and determined that this place be removed from the Heritage List.
