Statement of Significance

The building forms part of the remnant building stock which makes up the historic town's fabric.

Physical Description

Large single-storey Federation style brick & tile house, with wide verandahs, timber valance, double hung sash windows, chamfered verandah posts, front door with side lights. Example of boom period architecture. House set on large property with significant mature garden.

History

Large home/surgery constructed by Dr J. M. H. Stewart at an estimated cost of £3000. Southern wing is bungalow type divided by projecting bay windows from northern end. Frontage without verandah. The absence of this peculiarly Australian adjunct being partly due to the necessity of plenty of light in the waiting rooms and surgery. Entry hall had massive arch with flowered/scrolled capitals. Side lights (stained glass made in Perth) personifying art and music. End room facing street was patient's reception room next to surgery. Substantial wash house to rear. Generator house sited further down lot with acetylene generator supplying whole house with light. Unique water supply feature. Water ran from Munday's neighbouring bore down incline with sufficient force to operate ram and ensure abundant supply of water.
