Statement of Significance

The remains and site have significant associations with Samuel and Edward Wells, and as a hospitality stop at the crossroads.

Physical Description

The mudbat dwelling has been retained intact still with bush timber roof structures in place and a hipped corrugated iron roof. The building has been surrounded by other structures which have protected it from the elements.

History

Frederick Wells, brother of Samuel and Edward Wells, took up the lease on the property in 1873. When their mother came out from England in 1852, she brought six acorns which she gave to Edward. Later Samuel and Edward took over the property which they called 'Prospect', and Edward planted the acorns along the back boundary of the homestead allotment. In 1880, they opened the 'Prospect Arms Hotel' after Atkinson's 'Shepherd's Home' ceased to operate in 1879. In 1882, Edward Wells married a neighbour, Emily Byrne, and his brother later married Emily's sister. A track through to Newcastle (Toodyay) passed by 'Prospect', which was already on the north south route. The Byrne family have an annual reunion at Prospect Farm, and gather under the one of the Oak trees which were said to have been seeds carried from England and planted by the Wells brother's mother. In the 1920s the Toy family lived at Prospect Farm, and continued to do so after some of the family members moved to Mooramurra in 1929
