The place is a representative example of a commercial building constructed in Perth during the period of development and consolidation following the gold boom.

Example of a commercial building constructed in Perth during the period of expansion and development that followed the gold rush of the 1890s. In 1929 this building was the location of Cox Brothers which was a department store that sold furniture, drapers and fabric. In 1953 Clarkes and Mallabones retail shops were located in the building.
