This place is an example of an early building in the area and is representative of development north of the railway line within Bayswater. It is part of the early development that occurred in response to the relocation of the Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.
Timber framed cottage with weatherboard frontage and corrugated metal sides and a corrugated iron gable roof. A lean-to roof covers the rear portion of the cottage and there is a later extension to the rear, which is clad with weatherboard. A separate bull nosed roof covers the front verandah, which is supported on full height timber posts with open balustrade and approached by a flight of wooden steps. The central panelled front door is flanked by a double-hung wooden sash window on either side.
This cottage is one of a group of houses which was under construction during 1905- 7. Old sewerage maps indicate that there were once six worker's cottages in a row built in Coode Street, just under the subway, and the three at No 7, 15 and 19 Coode Street are the only ones remaining. This cottage appears to have been built and initially occupied by Herbert Bowmont, painter, and subsequently occupied by Alfred Clifford Catt. Those whose occupation was listed as "Painter" were most probably employed at the Midland Workshops and this cottage can be seen as part of the building activity which occurred in response to the relocation of the workshops.
