Statement of Significance

This single storeyed timber framed and corrugated galvanised iron roofed Pavilion, in the Federation Queen Anne style, has cultural significance because: the Park and its Pavilion have been established for a century and, for most of the history of Peppermint Grove, have been a social and recreational focus for the suburb; the Park and Pavilion have considerable historical and social significance; the Pavilion is a comparatively rare example of a public pavilion of this period; the park has associations with Keane and Sir J J Talbot Hobbs.

Physical Description

The pavilion was designed in the prevailing style of the Gold Boom period residences in Peppermint Grove. The Pavilion has been well maintained and has been little adapted and has retained its original character. The Park extends the open space of the foreshore and Keane's Point and provides a public focus for the recreational activities of the suburb.

History

Manners Hill Park Pavilion was built on land that was originally Edward Keane's cow paddock. In 1899 the land was purchased by the Crown and created into a public park. The Pavilion was erected in 1903, by which time a 6-hole golf course had been established in the park. The reserve and pavilion were created as places of public enjoyment, and continue in that role. The pavilion itself is one of few remaining public pavilions located in an open reserve. Considerable historical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

The Pavilion is an accomplished design which skillfully relates style, scale and detail.
