The building is an important component of the traditional commercial centre along James Street. It also forms part of the remnant building stock which make up the historic town's fabric.
A single-storey building built by Stephen Devenish in 1903. Constructed in brick and iron with original Edwardian shop front. Interiors retain original elements including pressed metal ceilings and light fittings. Awnings are not original.
Devenish & Sons were established in 1897. Stephen Devenish was born in 1852 and educated at Guildford and Perth. He left school at 11 years old and was employed by Henry Gray & CO - merchants of Geraldton and was later employed by Padbury Loton & Co - merchants. He was at one stage involved with the early pearling industry at Shark Bay. He later established S.B. Devenish & Co dealing as auctioneers, accountants, land & insurance agents. The business was originally conducted from Swan Street then the Gart building on the site of the present Town Hall. He then moved to the present site. The S.B. Devenish premises was once the Swan Building Society.
