Statement of Significance

This two storey brick, render, timber and tile residence, in an indeterminate style, most akin to a two storey InterWar version of a Federation Bungalow style, has cultural significancebecause: it has historical associations with Dorothy Huon, daughter of Sir J J Talbot Hobbs; it is located opposite the entry to the site of 'The Bungalow' and is part of a cultural group; it is a technical successor to two notable George TemplePoole projects; it is a rare example of its style and period.

Physical Description

The place is a very plain, unostentatious, although substantial, residence which appears to be in sympathy with the atmosphere of the time at the beginning of the Great Depression.

History

The place was possibly designed by Sir J J Talbot, more likely it was designed by his office, for Hobbs' daughter Dorothy and her husband Sydney Huon. The place stands opposite the entrance to the Hobbs' family estate 'The Bungalow'. Somehistorical significance.

Integrity/Authenticity

This two storey residence appears to follow a pattern for the design of two storeyresidences established by GeorgeTemple Poole in the Success Hill Residence and the former Claremont Police Station. In each of these cases a lightweight upper floor was placed over a masonry lower floor and the upper floor was ventilated from floor to eaves through the wall construction. This residence uses the same principle. It retains a high level of integrity.
