Statement of Significance

The place is representative of the Australian Pub tradition as a single-storey hotel with a verandah that extends over the pavement as a dominant streetscape element. The place is aesthetically

Physical Description

The building is truncated at its comer and is sited on the building line of the north-west comer of the intersection of Tower and Trump Streets. The building is constructed in brick laid in colonial bond that has been over-rendered. The roof is concealed behind a cement rendered parapet that has a curved pediment at the building's truncation that crowns the entry and bears the name of the hotel. A verandah extends across the original sections of the building along both street elevations. The original windows of the hotel have either been replaced or boarded-over; however, the windows retain ornate, rendered surrounds. It is believed that a fire, about three years ago, gutted the interior of the hotel. The interior was then substantially upgraded - new bars, lighting and false ceilings were installed. An accommodation wing was built on an upper level.

History

Malcolm architects, Robinson and Reid, drew up the plans for the Central Hotel for the proprietor Mr William Lowes. It was opened in June 1900 and within twelve months a saloon bar, a hall and a new wing of staterooms were added. From a photograph taken in 1901 there appears to be no parapet that conceals the roof as is now the case and the verandahs are straight not bullnosed as originally thought.
