On this site was another hotel, the Victoria before construction of the P& O in 1896. Also this hotel is a fine example of Gold Rush architecture and is an important component to the west end. This hotel has been classified for historic, social, architectural and streetscape reasons
The P & O Hotel is a two storey residential hotel with an attic floor. Some stucco ornament particularly at the apex of the pediment and a balustrade parapet. Sadly the building suffered from many alterations, in particular the removal of the verandahs and the corner tower and a proliferation of television antennas. Restoration to near original condition should be encouraged
