Statement of Significance

The site is important for its association with the development of recreational activities in the district.

Physical Description

The clay courts were located between the post office and the bakery (now demolished).

History

Netball (referred to as basketball until more recent times) was one of two outdoor winter sports (with hockey) played by young women in the district. The first courts were evidently unsuitable and netball was next played at a more central town location off Robinson Road. The basketball club was reformed after the Second War and competed successfully in the Katanning Association winning the grand final on a number of occasions including 1955, 1957 and 1967. Up to three teams represented Woodanilling ( A grade, B grade and juniors). Matches were played each second week in Woodanilling. On the intervening Saturday, Mr Spencer, would drive the players to Katanning in the school bus. In the late sixties, the matches were centralised in Katanning and only one Woodanilling team was represented. New courts had been constructed above the tennis courts at the Woodanilling Sportsground only a short time previously.
