Values

The precinct incorporates the east and west sides of King Street from Hay Street to Wellington Street, extends to His Majesty’s on the corner of Hay and King Street, and on either side of King Street on Wellington, Murray and Hay (north side) takes in approximately three lots. Pat of Wolf Lane and the whole of Princes Lane are also within the curtilage. The precinct comprises a substantial number of intact multi-storey commercial buildings dating from the turn of the twentieth-century, which are in the Federation and Inter-War styles and are of brick construction. Dates vary between c.1897-c.1929 with some later twentieth-century structures (e.g. the Hotel Ibis). A large proportion of the street surface is covered in original cobblestones.

History

During the mid nineteenth-century the King Street area comprised workers’ cottages, shops, smithies and foundries. With the gold rush in the 1890s, and the associated expansion of the city centre and increase in population and industry, larger manufacturing and wholesale firms replaced the small businesses erecting substantial new offices and warehouses in the area. The proximity to the Perth Railway Goods Yard across Wellington Street made King Street attractive to these enterprises. In 1904 His Majesty’s Theatre was built and the area continued its development through the 1920s. During the 1980s the threat of road widening led to the place being Classified by the National Trust (1981), recognised as a heritage precinct by the City of Perth in 1985, and entered on the Register of the National Estate in 1986. The warehouse and showroom character of King Street has been retained and since 1990 the area has been extensively restored. King Street is now home to galleries, cafes, restaurants and ‘high end’ fashion outlets.
