Historic and social significance for its associations with the West Australian newspaper and as a place of employment in Fremantle in the inter-war and post World War ll periods. Aesthetic significance as an example of a brick industrial building from the inter-war period. A minor landmark in Fremantle.
Three storey face brick and parapeted building which has been converted into apartments. ‘West Australian Newspapers Ltd’ appears in the parapet on the Wilkinson Street façade. There is a central walkway which extends from Wilkinson Street through to Coode Street.
This lot consists of two distinct lots. Lots 1470 to 1474 were purchased by the West Australian Newspaper group in 1938/9. They constructed their first main building, a paper store, in 1939. The second main building was constructed as an administration block and press room in 1954. Two warehouses were constructed on Holland Street in 1962 and 1975. (Since demolished) In 1994 the complex was bought by Homeswest and converted to 45 multi-storey townhouses. The main building (previously the paper store) was altered to accommodate 21 three storey apartments. Full history of the buildings is in the Local History Collection.
