St Just' is a two storey brick, timber and terra cotta tile mansion in the Federation Queen Anne style, has cultural significance because: - it has considerable historical significance from its associations with Richard Strelitz & William Forrest; - it is a prominently located mansion, exuberant, picturesque and controlled into a grand and unified architectural work; - it is an exemplar of its style, particularly in its application to the scale of a mansion; - it was notable as a centre for formal social events; - it retains a high levels of integrity and authenticity; - it is a major towns cape element in the suburb; - it strongly contributes to the community's sense of place.
'St Just' is a prominently located and remarkably intact example of a Federation Queen Anne style mansion, exuberant, picturesque and controlled into a grand and unified architectural work, which addresses its setting.
'St Just' was built c.1911 for Richard Strelitz, a successful businessman, and his wife Bessie. During WW1 Strelitz was interned by authorities, and was accused of signalling enemy ships at sea. After the war, 'St Just' was sold to William Forrest, son of Alexander Forrest. 'St Just' remained in the Forrest family until c.1943. A single storey detached groom come gardener's cottage (2 room cottage) in the south western comer of the site It is an outstanding example of a Peppermint Grove mansion. Exceptional historical significance.
'St Just' is an exemplar of its style, Federation Queen Anne, and a notable example of the exuberance of the style being used with the technical control necessary for the coherent expression of a mansion. The place retains a high level of integrity and a high degree of authenticity.
