Limestone wall is of heritage signifcance.
The original limestone wall fronting the site is understood to have been constructed prior to 1850s as part of the Convict Grant.
During the 1850s, Pensioner’s Barracks were built on the site during the Convict Establishment era. In 1886, the old Barracks was used by the Immigration Department, and in 1901/02, became an Old Men’s Home. By 1912, it was again an Immigrant’s Home after the old men were transferred to Dalkeith. During World War I, the old Barracks were used as a Base Hospital. After the war, it reverted to being an Immigrant’s Home. The old Barracks was demolished c. 1950. A Vice-Regal residence was also built in the 1850s. However, it was rarely used for Vice-Regal purposes. Lieutenant R E Wray lived there in the 1850s. During the 1880s, Lady Broome had an ‘at home’ there on the first Monday of the month. W S Marmion was a tenant there in the 1890s, leading it to become popularly known as “Marmion House”. By the 1920s, there was concern about its condition and in the 1930s, it was used for residential purposes by staff from Fremantle Hospital. It was demolished in 1939. In 1976, the Stan Reilly Centre built on the site. Reserve 27932 reserved for ‘Elderly Persons Accommodation and Social Centre’.
Pensioner Barracks - Demolished. Limestone wall deteriorated condition.
