The place is an example of the changing nature of East Perth, and a response to the demand for affordable accommodation in the mid-twentieth century.
Low rise building constructed in a U shape.
Parkside Hotel was built in 1960. It replaced a row of six almost identical houses at Nos. 148, 150, 152, 154, 156 and 158 Bennett Street, and a single building at No. 160, that was on the corner of Bennett and Wickham Streets with no set back. It is a two-storey motel complex, with parking at the rear, surrounded by three wings of rooms in a C-shape. Built opposite Wellington Square it was named Parkside. It is now Bailey’s Hotel Motel. There is a restaurant 'Bellavista' that addresses the corner. The place is opposite Wellington Square, a Registered Aboriginal Site (ID 37452), also called the Old Recreation Reserve, Bunjie Park. This location has social significance to Aboriginal people, who gather there and have done so for many years. The Wellington Square Cultural Heritage Assessment (Moodjar Consultancy, 2017) includes an ethnographic survey and a recorded childhood memory associated with the place was: “As kids we used to use the swimming pool in the motel on the corner of Wickham and Bennett Street.
High level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity.
