Physical Description

Simple symmetrical gable roofed hall. The roof of the hall was replaced after being blown off in a cyclone. The building was named in celebration of the 50th year of Queen Victoria’s reign.

History

The original Jubilee Hall which housed the library was altered by the Gascoyne Library Association as a memorial to Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations in 1887. The final cost of the hall was estimated to amount to £500; 50 of which was said to have been granted from the Royal coffers with the rest being raised by Government grant and private subscription. As the township and its social life grew, the Jubilee Hall played its part as the venue for “Suppers”. It was usual for revellers to tread the red carpet, laid across the sandy track called Francis Street, to partake of supper after balls, wedding receptions and private parties, held in the Masonic (later Parish) hall opposite. The hall was also used as the Carnarvon Municipal Council Chambers. All records kept there were at one time blown about the town when a cyclone hit and most were unfortunately lost or destroyed forever. The Jubilee Hall ceased to function as a Council Chambers on the 4th September, 1965 and as a library in 1973 when the new Gascoyne Library was opened. Time and elements have taken their toll on the Hall, still it stands part old, part new. The roof was blown off in a 1960 cyclone and was renovated again. Now it serves as a workshop for local potters and crafters, steadfastly commemorating the Jubilee of the Queen in 1887.
