Statement of Significance

The site of the former Gwalla Town Park has historic and social significance as an expression of the existence of the former town and its context with the rest of the Gwalla Precinct.

Physical Description

No built fabric remains other than some remnants of stone walls on the fence line which could have been part of some of Horrocks' walls which remain in more substantial condition along the roadl (Seventh Ave) to the west (see Site No. 137).: The site of the former Gwalla Town Park sits on a hill on the southern outskirts of Northampton just off the main road on the corner of Seventh Ave. The site would have been on the former approach to Gwalla which came in from the west, roughly along Seventh Ave, at this point. Remnants of stonework on the fence line could be part of original Horrocks' walls approaching the town. Otherwise the site presents as a vacant paddock used for grazing. There are several low mounds and collections of rock in the paddock that archaeological investigation could reveal as remnants of earlier structures.

History

Former Gwalla Park where social activities such as brass band performances and sporting events were held. See other Gwalla Sites for further information on the Gwalla settlement (Sites Nos.131,133, Gwalla Church, mine, etc).
