Recognition of the site
The site of the Varley Store was originally the Varley anthill tennis courts in 1932. On this site the first buildings, being a shop and house, in the Varley townsite were constructed. The shop was later run as a Farmer's co-operative. By the end of the depression, one of the initiatives of the Progress Association was the establishment of the Co-op. It began on W Miller's verandah in 1938, when he organised bulk purchases from Perth, and sold them to locals. In 1939 a committee was formed, and subsequently built the store in 1941. The first manager was Tom Warneford, who also ran the Co-ops weekly transport service. After World War Two the farm phone exchanges in the area were consolidated into one operation at the Store, which was also the post office. In the late 1960s the farmer's Co-operative sold the store into private ownership, and the shop and house were demolished. The existing building was constructed, and continues to operate as the general store, agencies, and post office with the mail run.
