Statement of Significance

House & Stables, 87 Hope Street, demolished c1981, is significant as a site because of its associations with the development of the horse racing industry in the area.

History

The original stables were built about 1949/50. In 1951/52 they were recorded as number 87. The 1956 to 1960 records note a residence and stables. In 1981 the stables were de-licensed. Association over the years with J.J. Starkie, J.A. Holmes, H.E. Denic, R.E. Miller, and Phil Coulson a leading trainer of trotters. Noted source: "Born winners, Born losers" by Jenny Tomlinson, Reeve Books 1990. Plans on file. Refer to parent place entry and "Hilton Residential Development Policy and Urban Design Guidelines" prepared by the City of Fremantle (adopted by Council 19/9/1994). This place was identified in the "Hilton Residential Development Policy and Urban Design Guidelines" prepared by the City of Fremantle, and adopted by Council on 19/9/1994.
