History

In 1900, a ‘villa’ was constructed on the Lot (pt Lot 887/895), owned by Jon Manners Hill (contractor), and occupied by John Matthews. In 1901-2, rate books show the occupant of this ‘villa’ changing to Frank Viles, and a second ‘villa’ is listed on the Lot, owned by D Patterson, and occupied by D.S. McColl (surgeon). The 1900 ‘villa’ is listed as occupied until 1903 by Frank Viles (merchant), during which time Paterson appears as the occupant of the second ‘villa’. From 1904, only one residence is listed at the property, owned and occupied by Hill. In 1906 the property was purchased by Joseph Mattison Johnston, who lived there (possibly with Mary Hannah Johnston?) until probably after WW1. By the 1920s, place was owned by Emily Rose Johnstone, and occupied by Frank Nicholas. From the 1930s into the 1940s, until the end of rate book records, the place was owned and occupied by Harry and Camille Edel. The place won a conservation award from the City of Fremantle in 1991.
