Statement of Significance

A high level of historic and social significance in its association with the Baldwin family, the old Serpentine townsite, and it use as a post office and staging post until the introduction of the railway. Consideration to be given to its association with the historic Serpentine townsite group of buildings.

Physical Description

Commodious rural residence, reminiscent of Victorian Georgian style, with its high-pitched hipped broken-back roof to the front to form a verandah.

History

Built in 1870s by Richard and Hannah Baldwin for their family (10 children) after purchasing the property (16tia) in 1871. The cottage served as a Post Office and Staging Post between 1887 - 1893 (taking over the business originally at Turner's cottage - refer SJ34). With the opening of the railway in 1893, the last Stage Coach ran through Serpentine in April 1893. The Baldwin family and their descendants are the longest resident in the Serpentine-Jarrahdale district. Richard Baldwin was also Serpentine's first publican, operating a wayside inn (south of Wellard Road) in the 1890s. [Refer SJ40J]
