19882 McDowell Street Precinct
Social, historical, architectural
The McDowell Street Precinct consists of 8 properties along the eastern side of the street constructed by the Millar's Timber and Trading Company as well as a number of other individual houses that also contribute to the group character of the street. Each of the houses has a separate entry. The properties included are 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 22. All 6 dwellings identified in the McDowell Street Precinct were destroyed by January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire.
The houses were built predominantly by the company which owned and managed the town, Millar's Timber and Trading Company from the 1890s to the 1970s. The materials for the cottages were likely to have been manufactured in the workshop and local tradesmen built the homes to standard designs. The families and individuals known to have lived in the street include; Wallace McDonald, Meldrum family, "Tassie" Clayton, Pat and Minnie Donovan, Arthur Anderson, Richard McCallum, Watson family, Barraclough family and Bevan family. All the dwellings and structures located in this precinct were completely destroyed in the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire. The Chimneys of each house along within that precinct however survived. These chimneys have since been removed as they were deemed structurally unsound.
