Brookton Hospital (fmr) was the only official hospital in Brookton, serving as a base for community medical services for many decades.
Group of hospital associated buildings that have developed over a period of time. The Matron’s Quarters are a brick construction located under the pepper tree.
Dr Allan Bean came to Brookton in 1920 and set up practice in his own home. It seems he was the catalyst for community action to establish a hospital. In 1921, a private hospital was established on Thomas Hall’s estate, a tenyear-old 4-room house with surrounding verandahs, and was called the Bethany Hospital. It provided for maternity and emergency patients. In 1929, the Brookton Hospital Board was formed, with H.G.Jacoby as Chairman for the next 24 years, even with occasional hospital closures and numerous additions and management changes. The last extensive additions to the hospital took place in 1965. In 1998 the Brookton Health Service took responsibility for the hospital. It has since closed.
