Statement of Significance

Commercial Building, 227 - 229 South Terrace, is a typical brick single storey building dating from c 1898. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of a commercial building in the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

227 - 229 South Terrace is a single storey brick commercial building of two shops, constructed in c1898. The walls are face brick with a simple parapet. There are recessed front entrances and rendered upstands to the shop front windows. There is a corrugated iron bullnose verandah supported on timber posts across the front of both shops. The building is located on the front boundary line with a footpath in front.

History

Commercial Building, 227-229 South Terrace was built in 1899 for Samson Henville. By 1901, it was occupied by William Sowden, a grocer. At some stage, the two terraced cottages were converted to a ‘shop and rooms’. By 1910/11, the property was owned and occupied by John Cooke. Cooke was the Mayor of Fremantle from 1924 to 1926. Francis McMahon was the owner in the 1930s and 1940s. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1955 shows pair of brick terraced shops at 227 and 229 South Terrace. Both were built to the street boundary and had centrally located recessed entries. A front verandah across both shops extended over the footpath. There was a large galvanised iron structure to the east of No. 227 and the back of the lot was filled with weatherboard and galvanised iron constructions. By 1969, the property was owned by Rudolf Humich and had been converted into four flats. The flats were very basic. The front flats comprised only a kitchen and bedroom; the rear flats also had a sitting room. All residents shared one toilet and bathroom. Bathroom and laundry additions were made in 1978.
