The use of limestone is part of the Fremantle landscape and gives the City coherence and character. Limestone walls were built around properties in Fremantle to prevent sand drift in response to an early building regulation dating from the 1830s. Limestone walls are one commonly encountered example of use of this stone as a building material, most of them dating from the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. Most of the limestone in small walls came from local quarries.
Limestone Wall
House, 162 South Terrace was built between 1895 and 1900. In 1901/02, the cottage was owned and occupied by Thomas Collins, a carpenter. Eneas McFall was the owner and occupier in the early 1930s. At this time, it was addressed 190 Mandurah Road. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a roughly square shaped stone/brick house, with a full length front verandah, and centrally located front steps. To the rear, there were weatherboard additions, including a bath. A paved path led down the side and across the rear of the house. There was a relatively large weatherboard outbuilding and a toilet set against the back fence. Ivan Arenovich owned House, 162 South Terrace c. 1960. Milica Dropulich bought the house in the early 1960s and was still the owner in 1981. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on: 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986.
