Terraces, 39-49 Bellevue Terrace is a very rare example of six attached timber framed residences. They are significant as an example of modest late nineteenth accommodation close to the centre of Fremantle. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
Terraces, 39-49 Bellevue Terrace is a single storey timber framed and weatherboard clad attached row comprising of six houses. The gable roof is divided by rendered firewalls and extends over the verandahs (visibility of the facades is affected by some places with enclosed verandahs and/or high fencing).
The origin of the name ‘Bellevue Terrace’ is doubtful, although in 1891 the area was subdivided by John Joseph Higham and known as Bellevue Estate. Bellevue Terrace was previously known as Higham Road. The short portion north of Fothergill St was originally Higham St. John Joseph Higham was one of the Town Councillors. His family arrived in the colony in 1853. Council rate books indicate the change of name occurred in 1923, although the change is shown on a 1908 sewerage plan. Terrace, 39 Bellevue Terrace: In 1896 pt 3 and 6 of 743 was a vacant lot owned by John Joseph Holmes. In 1897 it contained six cottages (39-49 Bellevue Terrace) with four rooms each. Two houses were on pt 3 and four on pt 6.
