The building played an important and pivotal role in providing for the medical needs of the Mingenew community over a significent period of time.
The building sits on a large lot in an elevated position. Its front steps, portico and verandahs make it an imposing structure. The present owners are refurbishing the interior.
Statement of Significance 1900 fiarly medical services were virtually non-existent except for midwives attending women in childbirth. Doctor from Dongara visiting Mingenew once per fortnight. 1918 Road Board purchased First Aid Kit which was kept at the Police Station for use by rate payers and general public. 1930 C.W.A. organised first health service, appointed a sister who lived and worked in the de-licensed hotel building. 1934 C.W.A. reluctantly handed over their project to build a hospital to the District Hospital Assoc. Inc. 1936 The Hospital was built, Road Board supporting on a pound for pound donation, fund raising activities, and the Lotteries Commission. 1942 The army took over hospital for twelve months as a casualty station. 1944 Owing to financial difficulties in wartime the hospital closed and the building was vested in the Road Board and became a leased residence. 1953 The building was divided into two separate living quarters - Silver Chain and Infant Health Sisters. A surgery was attached to the building. The building was used as the Silver Chain Nursing Association Centre by Sister Riseberry with continued district assistance. The Doctor attended the surgery on a weekly basis. 1977 A new Silver Chain Centre was built and the original building was once more leased as a private residence. 1990 The Shire sold the building as a private residence.
Integrity: The building retains its original form. Internal rooms are largely intact although functions have changed. Modifications: Brick and asbestos cement verandah infill
