Statement of Significance

The building is architecturally significant, possessing Italianate decorations such as chimneys and eaves corbels and Arts & Crafts 'Federation' influences such as timber worked gables. The transition between these architectural influences is a major characteristic of the period. The station is also historically important as a reminder of the effect on NOrtham's development of the opening of the railway to Kalgoorlie in 1896. Previously Northam was outshadowed by the neighbouring towns of Toodyay and York but with the coming of the Eastern Railway later extended to becomed the transcontinental line, it rapidly grew to be the main centre of the eastern wheatbelt.

Physical Description

A simple single storey brick, timber and iron railway building erected around the turn of the century, although no longer used as a railway station. It is soon to be restored for use as a museum and tourist overnight accommodation. An old steam train has been bought and the sleeper carriages are to be converted to the sleeping accommodation.
