Statement of Significance

: Cohn's Buildings is a fine example of the Federation Filigree style that typified the style of the Australian pub tradition as a two-storey building located on a prominent street corner with deep, shady verandahs that extended over footpaths as dominant streetscape elements, and as such, the building is an important element of the streetscape of Hannan and Porter Streets. Cohn's Buildings is a landmark in Kalgoorlie. Cohn's Buildings is aesthetically linked to the Exchange Hotel, Palace Hotel, Australia Hotel, Kalgoorlie Hotel and York Hotel with its heavy masonry form decorated with classical and Italianate detailing, and verandahs and balconies that extend over the pavement. Cohn's Buildings has historic value as a demonstration of the development that occurred in Kalgoorlie around the turn-of-the-century as it became a service centre of the goldfields. Cohn's Buildings has historic value for its close association with I. J. K. Cohn, one time Mayor of Southern Cross and Magistrate of Coolgardie.

Physical Description

A two-storey building, built to the street alignment, in the Federation Filigree style, c. 1890 - c. 1915 (Apperly, 1989). The building is sited on a prominent corner, Hannan and Porter Streets. The building is truncated at the corner which forms one of the primary entrances to the building. The building has a verandah and balcony that extend across the facades and over the pavement. The exterior features pedimented and decorative parapets; the pediments highlight the various entrances on the ground floor. Filigree iron work extends to verandah valances and verandah post brackets.

History

Cohn's Buildings were reconstructed on the site of the Club Hotel after a fire in 1895. The building was named after the owner I. J. K. Cohn who was one time Mayor of Southern Cross and Magistrate of Coolgardie. Part of the building was used as the Tattersall's Hotel, later called the Savoy (Laurie, 1995: 9) As at June 1995, a current occupant of the Cohn's Building is Eyres Reed Limited, a stockbroking firm with family connections going back to Coolgardie in 1896. The company has had an office in Kalgoorlie since the 1930s and at one time was the only independent stockbroker in Australia operating outside a capital city (Laurie, 1995: 10).
