Statement of Significance

The CBH grain silos have high social and scientific significance to the community and, despite their prominent and perceived unattractive/industrial appearance, they contribute to the aesthetic character • and significance of the townscape, and form an entry statement on the southern outskirts of Northampton.

Physical Description

The current CBH grain silos sit on a prominent (but low) hill on the southern approaches to Northampton. The silos themselves are very large, comprising several earlier rectangular bins and several later circular structures with conical roofs from which towers at the apex connect to elevated conveyor belt bridges. Despite their prominence, the very large diameter, in proportion to the height of the silos is such that overall they have a low profile.

History

The CBH silos, located on a low hill on the southern outskirts of town are thought to replace earlier bins or grain stacks were located in town, on the rail reserve at Robinson Street (see Site Nos. 77 & 80). The original bins on the site are the to large rectangular structures, now supplimented by the circular bins, constructed in the late 1980s and thought to be the first of their type in the state. The role of silos changed with the advent of road rather than rail transport to freight the grain to Geraldton for shipping. Chronology Entries 1968 The first CBH bin, a "D" type of 11 600 tonne capacity, was built at Northampton. 1981 A second CBH bin of 21 800 tonne capacity was constructed at Northampton. This lead So the closure of bins in other locations. 2002 Works costing approximately $4 million were undertaken to increase grain storage capacity to allow Northampton to act as a primary receival point for CBH.
