Duplex, 174-176 South Terrace, is a typical limestone, brick and tile single storey duplex pair dating from c1902. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.
174-176 South Terrace is a single storey, limestone, brick and tile duplex pair with a symmetrical facade built in 1901 and designed as an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roof is pitched and clad with tiles. The verandah has a continuous tiled roof and is supported by tubular steel posts. Across the front façade each has two timber framed double hung sash windows with the front door at the side and recessed towards the rear of the verandah. The pair are elevated from street level with set of steps leading to the entrance at the side of each house. There are three chimneys evident. There is a brick and iron wall to the front boundary line of no.174 and a hedge to the front boundary line of no.176. This place contains a limestone feature.
Duplex, 174 and 176 South Terrace was built in 1901 for E H Fortescue. In that year, one of the cottages was listed in the rate book as being empty; the other was occupied by R Harrison, a hotel keeper. Ernest Fortescue continued to own the property until his death c. 1935. By 1939, the property was owned by Albert and Alberta Mattingley. Oscar Gracie was a tenant during this time, followed by long term occupant, Owen Cole. Circa 1972, the property was purchased by Elsie Jewell and then by Peter and Edna Westall in 1976. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows 174 and 176 South Terrace as a mirror duplex pair. Both had verandahs across the front and wrapped around the side of each cottage and terminated at ‘wings’. To the rear, the cottages had verandahs running down the side, and galvanised iron outbuildings at the rear. By 1986, the original iron room had been replaced with tiles. In this year, the terraces were advertised as being for sale (together). Since that time, the terraced cottages have been in separate ownership. This place contains a limestone feature. Walls were built around properties in Fremantle to prevent sand drift in response to an early building regulation dating from the 1830s. It is not known how old this particular feature is. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - BROWN -significant for making a positive contribution to the built environment of Fremantle. It was also identified in the "Heritage Report on: 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986.
