The place has aesthetic significance in the range of original Art Deco details throughout its exterior and interior design. Few other buildings in central Perth possess such an extensive range and quality of Art Deco details. The building makes a strong contribution to the streetscape of Hay Street, while its style is a reflection of post-Depression development in the city. The place has historic significance in its continuous use as a licensed public house since 1848. The place has historic significance as the only remaining central city hotel designed in the Art Deco style.
Symmetrical facade with emphatic geometrical forms.
This hotel replaced the two storey 1878 John Bull Inn which in turn replaced an earlier hotel from 1848 called the John Bull Tavern. At this time John Chipper was the licensee and then owner. In 1885 the John Bull Inn’s name was changed to the Criterion Hotel. This hotel was one of the earliest in Perth to have electric light which occurred in 1892. When the 1937 hotel was built it had over 100 rooms as well as public rooms and bars. It was a modern hotel with all the conveniences of the time. The hotel was built for the Swan Brewery Company who held the lease to the hotel on the site since 1892. It was designed by architects Hobbs, Forbes and Partners as J. J. Talbot Hobbs had previously designed the Swan Brewery Company’s Brewery and Malthouse. Boans provided all the furniture, carpet, curtains, cutlery and crockery for the fit out. During the 1980s the hotel was renamed the Regatta Hotel Complex. The hotel was renamed The Criterion in 1996 when it was reopened after refurbishment.
High level of integrity. Medium level of authenticity as the facade is intact above ground floor level and modifications have been made internally.
