Statement of Significance

Formerly, the place had aesthetic value for its contribution to the Yarloop heritage area. Formerly, the place had demonstrated the standard type of commercial premises built in the inter war period.

Physical Description

Single storey timber framed structure with fiber cement sheet cladding. Corrugated metal clad gable roof, with the gable facing the street incorporating timber batten details. Large symmetrical shop front with a central doorway flanked by large plate windows with fanlights extending across the full width of the façade. The shop is attached to a timber framed and weatherboard cottage to the rear corner. The house presents with a symmetrical façade incorporating French doors. Destroyed by January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire.

History

This simple shop which dates from the 1930s was constructed at the peak period of activity at the Yarloop workshops. Many people settled in the town and district for employment at the workshops and retailers established businesses in the town to support the growing population. These premises were occupied at different times by the Cockburns, Whatmans and Cyril and Jean Pitts. This building was burnt down by the January 2016 Yarloop/Harvey/Waroona Fire. The Chimney was left standing however has was deemed structurally unsound and was subsequently removed.
