Statement of Significance

James W Turner was one of the original pioneers of the Augusta district, and so one of the first to build a home in the new settlement. The cellar and fig tree, located in what is now known as Turner Caravan Park are all that remains of his first home “Albion House”.

History

After land was issued in the new settlement of Augusta, James W Turner “proceeded to erect his pre-fabricate house on low lying land in the present ‘Turner Park’, Augusta.” [Cresswell, LOL, p46] Turner called his home “Albion House”, but unfortunately it had to be moved because of the flooding of the Blackwood River. It was dismantled and re-erected on higher ground, south of the original site. Several years later, Turner moved the house yet again, erecting it in Adelaide Terrace, Perth. This building became known as “Lismore House” and was demolished in 1946. The only evidence of Turner’s House is the remains of the cellar at its Augusta location in Turner Park. Turner also planted a fig tree at this site in 1830, which is still there. A cairn with a [plaque marks both these sites.
