Hickory Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century during the gold boom and much of the housing stock still dates from that time. The street was formerly known as James Street, the change occurring in 1901/02. By 1907, a small weather board cottage had been built on Lot 28 (later 6 Hickory Street). The owner at this time was Captain Frank Biddles. The house was demolished c. 1910 and in 1925/26, Lot 28 remained vacant land, owned by the Estate of John Ellis. In 1930/31, a house was under construction for Walter and Mabel Beesley. The Beesleys remained the owners until 1951/52, when the house was purchased by Alfred George Rowe. Mr Rowe, a lumper, lived in the house until at least 1974. A diagram dated 1954 shows House, 6 Hickory Street as a large weatherboard house with a centrally located path leading from the street to the front door. No front verandah is shown on the diagram, although there was a full length rear verandah. The house has had a number of owners since the late 1970s.
