In January 1929 Inspector Hatfield from the Education Department recommended a school at Kulja. His letter reads "a school at Kulja is justified. Even allowing for the temporary nature of the town, as it is a centre of railway construction, I think there is no doubt about the permanency of the settlement. The land is good, chiefly gimlet. At the time of my visit 60,000 bags of wheat were stacked at the siding. The parents are all farmers except Murphy, a storekeeper. The Orchards are entitled to a driving allowance but would not apply and would pick up the little Barrett girl. Crains have a good house and would board the teacher." The school was opened on the 26th August, 1929 with Mary Flynn of Dalwallinu as the teacher and remained about five years. She boarded with the Orchard family. After the school opened names prominent in the Parents & Citizens Association were Lamb, Orchard, Ovens and Knapp. The school opened and shut several times. It was re-opened by Margery Lamb as an assisted school and closed finally in 1948 when she resigned to marry W. Knapp.
