Murray Hospital has social significance as an ongoing site of health care for residents of the district for more than 50 years.
Brick and iron single-storey hospital.
At the start of the 20th century, Pinjarra had the district’s only hospital. This was a small house near the corner of George and James Streets, leased from J. P. McLarty. By the 1950s, the old hospital had become beyond repair and a new facility was needed. Land was acquired between the old hospital and the river, and new nurses’ quarters was the first building erected, in 1950, for £16,050. The hospital, like the quarters, was constructed by Fred Wells for a cost of £128,500, of which Lotteries Commission paid half. The new hospital was opened by Premier Ross McLarty in October 1952. It had a 24-bed ward, a four-bed ‘native ward’, outpatient’s wing, operating theatre, x-ray, pathology, and an eight-bed maternity ward. In 2010, the Hospital continues to function, although the Nurses’ Quarters have since been demolished.
