Aesthetic: The dwelling contributes to the aesthetic qualities of the Thomas Street area and forms part of the fabric of the streetscape of Subiaco. Historic: The dwelling is associated with the Mazzucchelli family who established a jewellery business in Boulder in 1903 and today have numerous stores around Western Australia. The dwelling was the family home for 80 years. Representativeness: The dwelling is an intact example of a residence constructed in the early 1900s in the Federation Italianate style.
Single storey brick and tile residence with added Italianate details such as decorative timber and metal filigree. The Municipal Inventory entry indicates that 60% of the original fabric remains. Servants’ quarters remain at the rear of the property but are not in working order.
· Sutton Lodge was purchased by Clara and Matthew Mazzucchelli in 1920 and remained in the family until 2003. Beryl and Thelma Mazzucchelli, twin daughters of Matthew and Clara, lived in the property together for 80 years. · Matthew Mazzucchelli, a watchmaker, and Sam Downes, a jeweller, began a business partnership in Boulder in 1903. In 1921 the Mazzucchelli family moved to Sutton Lodge after the rich gold was exhausted in the goldfields and Kalgoorlie suffered a depression. The Mazzucchelli’s re-established their watchmaking and jewellery business in Perth and the name currently remains strongly associated with the jewellery industry in Western Australia.
