Named after Koolama I, the State Ships passenger ship that was bombed by the Japanese 25-40 miles off the coast on 20 February 1942 at 11.30 am near Cape Rulhieres in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. Koolama Bay was also known as Kalamity/Calamity Bay. The area has a sandy beach, mangals, rugged hinterland and is at the mouth of the King George River. The vessel was abandoned by 160 passengers and crew at Koolama Bay. Ninety three men walked overland to Drysdale River Mission, the women and children were taken to safety by Captain Crave of the MV Kimberley.
