Physical Description

The precinct encompasses all elements that are included within the precinct boundary, including all built elements as well as streetscape - incorporating hard and soft landscaping, verge and pedestrian treatments, setbacks, views and sight-lines and general amenities (i.e. bus stops, seating). The precinct buildings are a mix of masonry construction, as well as earlier and contemporary timber buildings, and the landscaping also has a mix of materials and plantings. However, despite the varieties of materials and plantings, there is still an overall homogeny to the precinct. The main cultural heritage elements within the precinct that are also the subject of individual listing in the MHI include: • St Leonard’s Anglican Church (1899) – also in the Mitchell Street Precinct • Craig’s Building (1912) • Bankwest (c1920s/30s) • RSL Memorial Hall • Moreton Bay Fig Tree (1925) • Infant Health Centre (1957) – also in the Mitchell Street Precinct • Residence, 90 Strickland St (1920s) • Denmark Co-op • Clark’s Building • Berridge Building (1954) Other contributing elements or possessing some significance, but that do not have individual listings include: • Civic Centre (1956) Overall, the precinct demonstrates a typical regional main street development sequence that has some formality in its verge and pedestrian treatments, plantings of mixed species, heights and setbacks. The built heritage comprises a mix of commercial, public and civic buildings, as well as some early residential that has subsequently been adapted to a commercial use.
