Statement of Significance

Terraces, 23, 25 & 27 Ellen Street is a rare very fine early example of three attached stone residences in the Victorian Georgian style, representing Fremantle in the period before the gold boom. The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Terraces, 23, 25 & 27 Ellen Street is a three single storey attached row of rendered residences. The zincalume hipped roof extends over the verandah which is supported by chamfered timber posts and sits to the level of the pavement. Four painted brick chimneys with corbelling and timber double hung sash windows with six panes each are extant. The entrance doors have fanlights with three panes intact. See individual place records.

History

Ellen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. Three houses were built on the lot (Terraces, 23, 25 & 27 Ellen Street) before 1880 by Higham and sons. They were occupied by Jackson, a jeweller, George Shaife, a clerk and Raglan Jarvis, a carpenter. See individual place records.
