Statement of Significance

The main significance of this building is its integral and historic link with the historic Port Precinct as a whole. The various building and architectural features provide both an aesthetic and scientific value to the buildings. Its role as a hospital and a prison provide historic and social heritage values to the buildings. It is a direct link with the Royal Flying Doctor base and it was the first hospital built in the East Kimberley. Its subsequent use as a prison reflects the 'recycling' of the building for a later use.

Physical Description

There was an original hospital building constructed in 1894, of which nothing remains. The present buildings, comprising the original hospital, are of a mixed architectural style. The Matron's Quarters and the other out-buildings, such a;$ the Morgue and one wing of the hospital, appear to be the 1913 buildings. All are primarily of timber and iron. The Matron's Quarters, which is in poor condition, is a cottage style with a steep pitched gabled roof. The Morgue is of similar construction style and only partly intact. The main sections of the hospital and nurses quarters etc are in fairly good condition. Large wooden louvres and wooden shutters add an interesting architectural addition to the buildings. Between 1970 and 1993 the buildings were used as the Wyndham Port Regional Prison. The north wing has had additional internal walls added and prison safety screens added to the exterior of the building.
